Technological advancements continually redefine what is possible, and software innovations have created an environment where eCommerce merchants can fulfill orders in an ever-expanding array of methods.

The days of picking, packing, and shipping strictly from a warehouse are long gone, and brick-and-mortar stores can now exist both for retail sales as well as in-store fulfillment.

Let’s take a look at what this means and how a powerful SkuNexus solution can help facilitate it.

Turning Your Store into a Mini-Warehouse

As we state in all of our Use Cases, the cornerstone of any eCommerce management solution lies in inventory. Efficient, accurate, real-time inventory sync makes everything else possible. A lack of strong inventory management will most likely make it impossible.

Many of the same concepts discussed in executing BOPIS fulfillment apply to in-store fulfillment. Indeed, all BOPIS is in-store fulfillment, however, not all in-store fulfillment is BOPIS.

What do we mean?

The inventory on hand in a retail store can be used to fulfill eCommerce orders, both for in-store pickup as well as shipped items. Ship-from-store lets businesses pick/pack/ship items to customers elsewhere.

SkuNexus allows online retailers to add any/all of their retail stores to the system, and our distributed order management (DOM) takes it from there. Thus, if an order comes in, the item is in stock at a store, and that store is the optimal shipping location, SkuNexus will automatically route the order to that store for fulfillment.

Having an inventory management system that continually updates in real time across all digital and physical channels is fundamental to achieving this.

Store Employees Expand Their Roles

A retail store’s daily operations become much more complicated when fulfillment is added to the mix, and new roles and tasks must be clearly defined and assigned.

Many of the same concepts present in warehouse management become relevant in this scenario. Store employees will become pickers and packers in addition to their other duties, and strict organization is needed to avoid procedural breakdowns. This can include directed putaway, barcode scanning, detailed pick lists, specific packing material information, and the dissemination of any other data points necessary to provide maximum efficiency.

SkuNexus software provides businesses with a vast range of tools to ensure that everyone both knows what their responsibilities are and can successfully complete them for optimized in-store fulfillment.
